STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Lifelong Staten Islander and retired NYPD officer William J. Widmer, 71, of Pleasant Plains, died Monday at home.
Born and raised in Stapleton, Mr. Widmer graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School in New Brighton in 1959 and later settled in Pleasant Plains.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1965 until 1967. He then went on to become a police officer with the NYPD for 20 years, retiring in 1982 from the 120th Precinct, St. George.
Mr. Widmer was an avid golfer and also enjoyed fishing and hosting barbecues. He also traveled frequently to his vacation home in the Adirondacks.
His son, Steven, died in 1969.
Surviving are his wife, the former Tita Rodriguez; two sons, William and Michael; a daughter, MaryLou Saia; a stepson, Jansen Rodriguez; two stepdaughters, Janice and Johanna Rodriguez; a sister, Patricia Kelly; six grandchildren, and his former wife, MaryLou Ripley.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
