William L. Moffitt, 74, of Castleton Corners, a retired truck driver who was a loving family man, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, he moved to Graniteville in 1989, and lived there for 11 years. He then moved to New Dorp and lived there, before entering Clove Lakes Health Care Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, in 2003.
He graduated from Manual Training High School in 1956 in his native borough.
Mr. Moffitt worked for 20 years as a truck driver, transporting large newsprint reels, for Daniels and Kennedy Trucking in Brooklyn. He then worked 14 years for Superior Studs Building Materials in Queens as a truck driver, until he retired in 2003.
Mr. Moffitt enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Arizona. He liked playing Bingo and cards. He also liked playing the lottery. He was a member of the Gentlemens Card Club in the long-term care facility.
"He loved life and he was always the life of the party," said his family.
His wife of 39 years, the former Nuala McInerney, died in 2002.
Surviving are his three daughters, Nuala McCarthy, Tara Joyce and Kerry Stankevicius; a brother, Harry Stuart, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph-St. Thomas R.C. Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, both in Pleasant Plains.
