William Gorman, 87, of Oakwood, a baseball fan and avid golfer, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born in New Dorp, Mr. Gorman moved to Marshalls Creek, Pa., in 1985 and lived there for 15 years. In 2000, he returned to Staten Island and settled in Oakwood.
Mr. Gorman graduated from New Dorp High School where he captained the baseball and basketball teams. He also played for the All-City baseball and basketball teams as a teenager.
He was a member of the Mount Manor Golf Club, Marshalls Creek, as well as the Staten Island Baseball Old Timer's Club.
From 1944 to 1946, Mr. Gorman served in the U.S. Navy. He was a store keeper on the Northampton-class heavy cruiser, the USS Chicago.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Schweiger; one son, William Gorman; four daughters, Donna Loveridge, Karen Wilchek, Nancy Nix and Marna Gorman; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements, including cremation, are being handled by the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville.
