William Foder of Huguenot, 78, a retired city police officer and devoted family man, died Saturday in the Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.

The lifelong Staten Islander was born in Charleston and moved with family to Tottenville when he was a child. He settled in Huguenot about 20 years ago.

A Korean War veteran, Mr. Foder served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956, stationed aboard the USS Shelton in the South Pacific.

He was a city police officer for 20 years, and retired from the North Shore's 120th Precinct in St. George in 1980. He then worked as a bus driver for Pioneer Transportation Corp. until 1999.

Mr. Foder most loved being with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Mildred Russell; his sons, William Jr., Allen, Lawrence and Ronald; his daughter, Cheryl Floystrop; five sisters, Shirley Bassano, Elizabeth Fayder, Janet Bockmeyer, Adele DeMagistris and Joyce Haberkorn; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, with a mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, both in Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
