STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Lifelong Staten Islander Warren E. Schiele, 89, of Prince's Bay, a retired math teacher and loving family man, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital South, Prince's Bay.
Born in Stapleton, he later moved to Prince's Bay.
Mr. Schiele was born in Stapleton and graduated from Tottenville High School.
A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, and saw duty in the European Theater of Operations.
He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Wagner College, Grymes Hill, and his master's degree, also in mathematics, from Columbia University, Manhattan.
Mr. Schiele taught mathematics in the Westville and Bridgewater Raritan school districts in New Jersey for many years. He also worked as an editor for the publisher Harcourt Brace World.
He was a member of the Dead Poets Society, a luncheon group for retired teachers.
A master cabinetmaker, he loved woodworking, and also was an artist who enjoyed painting in both watercolor and oils. He was fond of completing the crossword puzzles in the Sunday New York Times.
Mr. Schiele was dedicated to his children and his grandson, Thomas, family said.
His wife of 35 years, Margaret, died in 1981.
Surviving, along with his grandson, are his sons, Donald and Eric; his daughters, Donna Gloeckner and Ellen Greifenstein, and his longtime companion, Catherine Hendrickson.
The funeral service is Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Arrangements include cremation.
