Walter Osborn

September 1, 1942 — September 1, 2019

Walter J. Osborn, 77
Sept. 1, 1942 - Sept. 1, 2019
Walter J. Osborn passed away peacefully at home on his seventy-seventh birthday.
Walter was a lifelong resident of Staten Island. His accomplishments epitomized a life-long commitment to volunteerism and community service.
An Air Force veteran, Walter joined the Knights of Columbus in 1990 and served as grand knight from 1996-1998. He was commander of the Color Corps for six years and Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree. Walter helped raise funds by initiating a weekend golf outing in the Poconos and overseeing dinner cruises for 13 years aboard The Mystique to help raise money for a variety of charities.
In 1990 he joined the AOH, where he initiated their annual Shillelagh golf outing, an event that is still successful today in its 20th year. In 2004, he joined the Elks, and helped with all of the picnics and holiday parties which benefited the United Cerebral Palsy.
He joined Meals on Wheels of Staten Island in 2002, and was a dedicated volunteer for 17 years, delivering in all types of weather. His compassion for the recipients to whom he delivered was evident and appreciated. For the past 13 years, Walter, with the help of his wife Grace, has spearheaded the Wounded Warrior Project  on Staten Island. He chaired their annual fundraiser which is held every June at the Staaten.
The event has raised more than $300,000.00 which has been used to aid injured service men and women.
Some of the many accolades Walter has received due to his work in the community, has been The Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award for Volunteerism and the Robert Straniere Award for Community Service. He was also chosen to be the grand marshal at the Great Kills Memorial Day Parade.
Walter is survived by his wife of 49 years, Grace; his sons, Ryan and Brandt, his daughter-in-law, Sunjin Lee and his grandson, Ruan. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carlo and Mildred Buonviaggio and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home is on Friday at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Clare RC Church at 9:45 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may visit Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter's name to Wounded Warrior Project  or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital  or Meals on Wheels of Staten Island would be appreciated.
