Vito Fonte, 84, of Tottenville, a loving family man who was fond of music and gardening, died Sunday at home.
Born in Trapanni, Italy, he was educated there. He immigrated to the United States in 1967, moving to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and settled in Tottenville 10 years ago.
Mr. Fonte was a building superintendent for the Pan Am Building on Park Avenue in Manhattan. He retired in the early 1980s.
He loved listening to Italian music and playing the accordion and guitar. He was a wonderful gardener, and took pride in the vegetables he raised, along with his fig tree and roses. He was always eager to learn and embraced new technology like his iPad. And he loved sweets, especially homemade cookies and desserts.
Mr. Fonte attended Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Maria Calamusa; his sons, Michael and Nicolo; his daughter, Toni Perremuto; his brother Lorenzo, and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
