STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Staten Islander Violet M. Dowling, 91, of Huguenot, a retired medical secretary, died Wednesday in the Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born Violet M. Douglas in Quebec, Canada, she was brought to Brooklyn as a child and moved to Huguenot in 1992.
She graduated from the Secretarial School for Women in Oneonta, and worked as a medical secretary for many years at several hospitals in Brooklyn, including St. Mary's and Midwood hospitals. She also worked as the executive secretary for the hospital director at Brooklyn-Caledonia Hospital, retiring in 1988.
She was a member of the Catholic War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary; the Catholic Daughters of America and the Mount Loretto a Friendship Club.
Mrs. Dowling enjoyed traveling and taking cruises. She also liked visiting Atlantic City and attending Broadway shows.
"Her grandchildren Marie-Elena and Courtney Marie were the joy of her life," said daughter-in-law, Paula.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot, and attended religious pilgrimages and retreats in New York, Brooklyn, Long Island and Rome.
Her husband of 35 years, Charles F., died in 1976.
She is survived by son, Charles V.; a sister, Elsie Bombard; a brother, John Douglas, and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Burial will follow in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale.
