STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Thomas F. Quinlan, 80, a successful businessman and talented craftsman who built his own house in Pleasant Plains, died Friday in his Rockville, Md.,home.
Born in West Brighton, Mr. Quinlan had also lived on Todt Hill, before moving to Pleasant Plains, where he had resided for almost 50 years. He had lived in Maryland for the past year and a half.
Mr. Quinlan owned and operated his family-owned business, T.F. Quinlan & Son Inc. Heating, with his brother, Thomas R. Quinlan, for more than 40 years, retiring in 2006.
He was an alumnus of the former Augustinian Academy, Grymes Hill, and held a bachelor's degree from St. Peter's College, Jersey City, N.J.
Mr. Quinlan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Japan from 1959 to 1961.
An avid boater, Mr. Quinlan was a member of the Richmond County Yacht Club. He flew small planes for several years as a hobby and enjoyed golf and photography.
He was dedicated to his family and was intelligent, witty and generous, according to his family.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Melinda, are his sons, Christopher T. and Patrick T.; his daughter Julie Quinlan Schrot, and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday, from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Pleasant Plains. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, also Pleasant Plains.
