STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Tessie Sarli, 106, of Egbertville, a retired seamstress who is remembered as a loving aunt, died Thursday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided for 11 years.
Born in Lower Manhattan, she graduated from high school there and lived on Broome Street in what is now called Soho for much of her life. She moved to Staten Island in 2003.
Ms. Sarli worked as a seamstress for about 50 years for ILGWU, until retiring in 1973.
She enjoyed going to casinos, something she did until she was 95 years old, and playing cards and bingo. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and as a younger woman volunteered her time making items for the Army.
While living in Manhattan, she was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church. At Eger, she went to mass every day.
Everybody cared for her, said her niece, Rosalie Agnello. She was a very loving aunt.
The funeral will be Monday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:15 a.m. in St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
