Native Staten Islander Shaun P. Walsh, 26, of Hazlet, N.J., an All-Star youth league and high school baseball player died Friday at home.
Born in Rossville, he moved to Hazlet in 1999.
A graduate of Raritan (N.J.) High School, Mr. Walsh attended Felician College on a combined athletic/academic scholarship and also attended Rutgers University where he studied environmental science.
An outstanding pitcher, Mr. Walsh was an All-Star in the South Shore Little League before moving to New Jersey. In the Garden State, he earned spots on the All-Shore, Gannett N.J. All-State and the Coaches All-Divisions teams.
Among his signature accomplishments was pitching his team to the N.J. State Division II championship.
An avid ocean fisherman, Mr. Walsh enjoyed angling for striped bass and was a member of the Asbury Park Fishing Club.
He was a wonderful son, brother and friend, said his mother, Elizabeth Sorensen-Walsh.
Along with his mother, Elizabeth, surviving are his brother, Matthew; his sister, Megan Walsh; his maternal grandmother, Patricia Sorensen, and his paternal grandfather, Patrick F. Walsh.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 1 p.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
