Former Staten Islander Ruth Marjorie Knott, 70, an avid tennis player who enjoyed sailing and caring for animals, died June 20 at the Kobacker House, Columbus, Ohio.

Born and raised on Staten Island, she lived in Tottenville for 34 years before settling in Columbus.

After graduating from Tottenville High School in 1960, she worked for America Electric Power in Manhattan. When the company moved to Columbus, she also relocated there, and worked for the company for another 17 years before retiring in 1994.

She enjoyed skiing and playing tennis in her younger years. She was a former member of the Tennis Club of Staten Island in Travis and later of the Wickertree Tennis Club, Ohio. She was a member of the U.S. Tennis Association. She enjoyed sailing and had traveled to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

After her retirement, Miss Knott also volunteered at St. Ann's Hospital, Columbus. She enjoyed watching her friends' cats when they took vacations. Miss Knott would even visit the nursery at the zoo to play with lion and tiger cubs. She also was a movie buff and loved to solve crossword and sudoku puzzles.

In her two-year battle with cancer she was attended to by her good friends, Kenneth Spilke and Gloria Allen, her sister, Jean, former co-workers and members of her tennis club, said Dorothy Kroeger, her sister.

In addition to her sister, surviving are her brothers, Raymond and Stanley Knott, and a sister, Jean Stricklin.
