Robert M. Stewart Sr., 74, of Huguenot, a retired mechanic and business owner �
�who enjoyed racing his stock car as a young man and watching NASCAR racing, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
The lifelong Staten Islander was born in Eltingville, then lived most of his life in Huguenot.
He attended Tottenville High School.
Mr. Stewart enjoyed working on cars and turned his passion into his career.
A mechanic, he owned and operated Stewart's Service Station in Annadale for 30 years, until retiring in 1994.
He owned a stock car and raced in the 1960s and 1970s at the former Weissglass Speedway in Port Richmond, as well as at the East Windsor Speedway, Windsor, N.J., and Wall Stadium in Wall, N.J.
Mr. Stewart enjoyed watching NASCAR and BUSH Truck Series Racing on television. He also enjoyed watching both the New York Mets and Yankees.
"My father had a heart of gold," said his daughter, Kerri Stewart.
Mr. Stewart's wife of 43 years, Carol (Honey), died in 2008.
He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen M. Stewart, in 2009.
Surviving, along with his daughter Kerri, are his son, Robert Jr.; a brother, William P. Jr., and a grandson.
Arrangements, including burial in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp, are being handled by the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville.
