STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Robert Crudo, 70, of Tottenville, a retired longshoreman remembered as a devoted family man, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Crudo moved to New Springville in 1994 and to Tottenville in 2007.
He was a longshoreman with the International Longshoreman's Association Local 1588 for more than 40 years, working on the docks in Manhattan and New Jersey. He retired four years ago.
In his spare time, he loved watching horse races, and would often go crabbing with his brothers on the piers in Brooklyn. He was an avid Mets and Giants fan, and enjoyed playing the lottery.
Mr. Crudo also loved taking trips to Atlantic City, going on cruises, and traveling to the Catskill Mountains.
"He had a heart of gold. There was nothing he wouldn't do for his daughter and his granddaughters," said his daughter, Robyn Longo.
His wife of 30 years, the former Grace Marie Chiappa, died in 1999.
In addition to his daughter, Robyn, surviving are a brother, Joe; two sisters, Jane Scognamillo and Carol Dunbar, and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
