Richard Doody, Jr

Funeral arrangements have been set for Richard P. (Rich) Doody, 60, of Tottenville and Barnegat Light, N.J., a retired FDNY lieutenant who was found slain Monday in the New Jersey home by Long Beach Township Police officers.

Born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, he graduated from St. Francis Prep in his native borough, and attended the College of Staten Island.

Mr. Doody had a 29-year career with the FDNY, first assigned to Engine Co. 239 and Ladder Co. 105 in Brooklyn. After being promoted to lieutenant in 2001, he went to the Fire Academy at Randall's Island, teaching probationary firefighters. When the terrorist attacks of 9/11 occurred, the class had graduated, and everyone was rushed to Ground Zero on FDNY buses. He spent several weeks at Ground Zero, working on the pile, before being assigned to the Ceremonial Unit. He later went to Ladder Co. 84 in Huguenot and retired from that post in 2011.

He and Virginia Murray met when she was playing softball on a team in Brooklyn and he was the third-base coach. They wed in 1985 and moved to Sunnyside before settling in Tottenville in 1991. They had been dividing their time between Tottenville and the Barnegat Light house, which they bought in January.

Mr. Doody was the founder of the 9-11 Sticker Fund, and was responsible for the design, fabrication and distribution of the well-known red and white FDNY 9-11-01, All Gave Some, Some Gave All stickers. Proceeds from their sale were donated to the FDNY Elsasser Fund for the widows and children of fallen firefighters.

In January 2008, he helped rescue a 260-pound Kean University football player who was pinned in a car after a crash on Arthur Kill Road by the West Shore Expressway.

Eleven thousand guys would have done exactly what I did, Mr. Doody told the Advance at the time. To be be recognized for it, I'm kind of embarrassed, to tell you the truth. It's nice to be honored, but it's not necessary. We do what we do out of love for what we do.

He loved fishing for striped bass, scuba diving with the Ocean Horizons Scuba Club in Bay Ridge and underwater photography. He also enjoyed woodworking, playing guitar, and had recently taken up golf.

Mr. Doody most loved being the favorite Uncle Foo-Foo to his 15 nieces and nephews.

He would help anyone, anywhere, said his wife, Virginia. He would change someone's flat tire on the side of the road in a monsoon, without a second's hesitation. He was funny, warm, caring, generous, and his heart was open to family, friends, strangers. He was always genuine.

Surviving Mr. Doody, along with Virginia, his wife of 30 years, are his sisters, Catherine Lorenzo and Maureen Fanning.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral home, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, both in Tottenville. Arrangements include cremation.
