Paul Michael Ulanich, 77, of Pleasant Plains, a retired buildings and grounds superintendent and hardworking family man, died Friday in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.

He had been staying at his summer home in Berlin, Md. Born in Westland, Pa., he graduated from Hickory High School there.

Mr. Ulanich first lived in Rosebank after coming to the Island, then settled in Pleasant Plains 43 years ago.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a corporal from 1957 until 1960.

Mr. Ulanich retired in 2003 as the superintendent of buildings and grounds for the Church of St. Luke's in the Fields in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. Prior to that, he was a plumber for Duo Plumbing and worked at St. Michael's Home on the Island.

He was a quiet man who enjoyed the company of his family and doted on his grandchildren. He also was fond of working in his backyard garden.

Mr. Ulanich had a passion for golf, which he played until very recently, and loved fishing and crabbing at his summer home.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Patricia Gallicchio; his sons, Paul and Peter; his daughters, Allyson Ulanich and Amy Duval; his sister, Irene Shackelford, and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, witha Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains. Arrangements include cremation.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions in Paul's name to Lifestyles for the Disabled OR DS Network 21 (Downes Syndrome) (Monmouth County) would be appreciated.
