STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Nancy Mure, 76, of Prince's Bay, a retired registered nurse who was passionate about her profession, died Monday in Calvary Hospice, Brooklyn, where she had been a resident for five days.
Born Nancy Porcelli in Brooklyn, she moved to Prince's Bay in 1996.
Mrs. Mure worked for 39 years as a registered nurse. She spent 14 years as a nursing supervisor at the Clove Lakes Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, retiring five months ago.
Before that, she worked for 10 years as a pier-diem nursing supervisor at the Golden Gate Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Meiers Corners.
She worked for four years with NurseSmart.Com, a medical-legal consulting service.
Mrs. Mure worked as the acting director of Patient Care Services for the Surgical Division of Nursing for two years at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark. As part of her work there, she helped develop a special program allowing patients to have bloodless surgery, for patients who didn't want transfusions because of religious reasons - a fact, she told family members and friends she was proud of.
She also worked for 23 years as a registered nurse at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn. During that time, for seven years she served as director of nursing for the surgery division. She also served for three years as the assistant director of nursing for the Emergency Department. For three years, she served as the administrative coordinator for critical care. She also served for 10 years as the assistant head nurse for the surgical ICU and Open Heart Unit. During her time at the hospital, she developed and initiated an 8-bed surgical step-down unit. She also introduced patient-controlled analgesia for pain management in post-operative patients.
She also worked as per-diem registered nurse Lutheran Medical Center and Victory Memorial Hospital, both in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Mure received an associate's degree in applied science from Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, and a bachelor's in health science and master's degree in community health care administration from Brooklyn College.
She was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains.
Mrs. Mure enjoyed shopping and spending time with her grandchildren.
"She was a devoted mother to her three children, and she cherished time with her eight grandchildren, who were the light of her life, and most importantly she was admired by many for her caring heart and her dedication to the nursing profession," said her daughter, Donna DeSisto. Her husband of 30 years, Paul, died in 1994.
Along with her daughter, Donna, also surviving are two other daughters, Nancy Sue Mure and Paula Catania; one sister, Lorraine Maltzman, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will be in Canarsie Cemetery, Brooklyn.
