Mildred Burns

February 27, 1939 — December 13, 2024

Mildred Mary (Millie) Burns, 85, grew up in Brooklyn and Staten Island and was the only child of Mildred and Charles (Bill) Burns. Millie attended Our Lady of Angels grammar school and later lived in her beloved Bay Ridge. Millie was married to Peter Purpura and raised her 3 children Mark Purpura, Faye Dilgen and Amy Purpura Smith in Bay Ridge also. Millie graduated High School at Villa Maria Academy in SI and completed the programs at John Robert Powers and Catherine Gibbs. She worked for many years at Bay Ridge Travel, was active at OLA as a Eucharistic minister and also sang in the choir and for the folk mass. She later worked at Meryl Lynch and Shearson Lehman among other Wall Street firms.

After selling her home on 78th street, Mimi settled in Dobbs Ferry NY where she was a secretary in the Nursing Dept of Mercy College and at Sacred Heart Church. Mimi loved to travel, read, and enjoyed Dixie Land Jazz, tap dancing and a good Lindy Hop. She is Grandma to 7: Anthony and Nicole Purpura, Gabe and Shannan Smith, and Kalilla, Teak and John Hudson Dilgen. We are grateful to the staff of Eger Nursing Home for their support the last few years and a very special thanks to Enea Dilgen, the most caring roommate anyone could ask for.
