Lifelong Tottenville resident Matilda (Tillie) Mazurek, 94, a former beautician and seamstress who loved to read and spend time with her many grandchildren, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born Matilda Martino, the Island native worked as a beautician with her sisters at a shop in Port Richmond for several years before gaining employment at a Van Heusen shirt factory in Perth Amboy.
A longtime seamstress, Mrs. Mazurek used to make clothes for her children and her first granddaughter.
She worked at the factory in New Jersey for five years and then became a housekeeper. Mrs. Mazurek retired in 1992.
She was a member of the Tottenville-based AARP group.
She was a longtime New York Mets fan and enjoyed reading Women's World magazine and the Advance.
Mrs. Mazurek enjoyed solving word-search puzzles and playing poker.
She loved to sew, bake and cook, especially for her many family members on Christmas Day, a special holiday for Mrs. Mazurek, said family.
She was a great mom to all of her children, said her daughter, Jeannette Springstead. Everyone should have a mom like her.
Mrs. Mazurek attended Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
Her husband, Joseph, died 1999.
In addition to her daughter, Jeannette, surviving are two sons, Joseph Mazurek and William P. Uhler; eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
