STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mary K. Zulferino, 76, of Marlboro, N.J., a former Staten Island resident and retired bus matron, died yesterday in Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, N.J.
Born Mary K. McKenna in Brooklyn, she moved to New Springville in 2005. She settled in Marlboro in 2010.
A homemaker, Mrs. Zulferino worked for 18 years as bus matron for the 21st Avenue Bus Co., Brooklyn, retiring in 2000.
A graduate of a Brooklyn high school, she was a parishioner of St. Athanasius R.C. Church, Brooklyn.
Mrs. Zulferino was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed celebrating St. Patrick's Day, hosting a huge party for family and friends.
She also enjoyed visiting Atlantic City.
"She truly had a very lively personality. We nicknamed her Lucille Ball because she was just the kind of person who always gave us something wonderful to laugh about. She truly will be missed by all of us," said her daughter-in-law, Theresa Zulferino.
Her husband of 52 years, Ralph Sr., died in 2010 and her son, Ralph Jr., died in 2007.
Surviving are two sons, Frank and Henry; one daughter, Mary Rose Giliberti; one brother, Hank McKenna; one sister, Patricia Amico, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be tomorrow from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
