STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Staten Islander Mary M. Kenny, 89, of Bangor, Pa., the loving matriarch of four generations, died Thursday in Easton (Pa.) Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided for about six months.
Born and raised Mary Stiemel in Manhattan, she moved to Stapleton in 1962 and to Dongan Hills in 1973. She relocated to Bangor 12 years ago.
Primarily a homemaker, she also worked as a food server at the former U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Clifton.
Mrs. Kenny was the mother of 11 and was the heart and soul of a very large family, her relatives said.
She enjoyed watching baseball games and taking trips to Atlantic City
Mrs. Kenny's son, John, was killed in Vietnam in 1966 while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Her husband of more than 50 years, John, died in 1999. She also was preceded in death by her son, James, in 1997; her daughter, Elizabeth Donnelly, in 2007; her daughter, Jacqueline Harsche,in 2010, and her son, John, who was killed in Vietnam in 1966 while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Surviving are her sons, Peter (Jerry), Michael and Kevin; her daughters, Maureen Rivera, Diane Sadler, Patricia Colon and Margaret Ann Lovell; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, with a mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, both Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
