STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Marja K. Zito, 88, of Toms River, N.J., a quality control person at Procter & Gamble for over three decades, died Tuesday at home.
Born Marja K. Merikanto in Turku, Finland, Mrs. Zito was raised and schooled in Finland as well. In her 20s, she sailed to America, came to Staten Island, initially residing in Westerleigh. She also lived in Great Kills before settling in Toms River in the late 1970s.
Mrs. Zito worked for 34 years as a quality control person for Procter & Gamble at its former Port Ivory location. She retired prior to her move to Toms River.
A singer and a member of a local chorus in her community, Mrs. Zito traveled often and enjoyed playing cards. She also spent a lot of time with friends and family.
Her husband Dominick Zito, died in 1986.
Surviving are a son, Vincent Zito, three daughters, Patricia Ferenczi, JoAnn Zito, and Gail Kochon; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, is handling the arrangements, which includes cremation.
