Maria Ferlazzo, 78, of Meiers Corners, a homemaker and skilled needlecrafter whose family was the center of her life, died Tuesday at home.
Born Maria Laudani in Alcamo, Sicily, Italy, she immigrated to the United States in 1970, moving to Meiers Corners.
Mrs. Ferlazzo cherished her family and enjoyed being with them, especially her grandchildren.
She was an excellent needlecrafter and was fond of knitting, crocheting and needlepoint embroidery. She enjoyed making scarves, sleep socks and other items for her family. She also was a wonderful cook, family said.
She was loving, very caring and compassionate, said her daughter, Sabrina Grecco. She was funny. She was forgiving and understanding, and just a wonderful mother, grandmother and woman.
Mrs. Ferlazzo was a longtime parishioner of St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners.
Her husband of 34 years, Santo, died in 1992.
Surviving, along with her daughter, Sabrina, are her sons, Michael, Anthony and Joseph; her daughter, Maria Cristina Grecco; her brothers, Vincenzo and Stefano Laudani; her sister, Francesca Spica, and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Rita's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
