Margaret H. (Peggy) Lahey, 85, of Concord, a former telephone operator and the loving matriarch of three generations of family, died Saturday at her residence in Sunrise Senior Living.
She was born Margaret H. McEwan in Brooklyn and was brought to Oakwood as a child in 1929. In the late 1930s, she moved to Tottenville, where she graduated from Tottenville High School. She lived in the community until relocating to Rumson, N.J. in 1978 and to Lakewood, N.J., in 1981. She returned to the Island in 2002, moving to Great Kills, and settled in Concord in 2011.
Mrs. Lahey was a telephone operator in Tottenville for seven years. She left the workforce in 1955 to devote herself to her family and home.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and often made sweaters and blankets for her grandchildren.
Mrs. Lahey will be remembered as the quintessential housewife, who loved to take care of her husband and family. Her home was her pride and joy, family members said.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
Her husband of 43 years, Tyrell (Mickey), died in 1991.
Surviving are her son, Gary; her daughters, Mary Pat Marrone and Carol Mannion; a brother, James McEwan; a sister, Eleanor Maciorowski; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
