STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Liselotta Preuninger, 94, whose talents and skills found their expression in many occupations and passions, died Wednesday in Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home, where she had resided since May 2011.
Born Liselotta Zinn in Manhattan, she moved with family to Dongan Hills, where she was raised. She settled in Huguenot in 1995.
She earned her undergraduate degree and a master's degree in education from Brooklyn College, and received a master's degree in German from Middlebury (Vt.) College.
Mrs. Preuninger was a tailor in Manhattan's Garment District and later was self-employed, working out of her home. During that time, she also worked as a baker. She then became a special education teacher at Bernstein Intermediate School, Huguenot, for 15 years, until retiring in 1982. She also was a private tutor.
An avid gardener, she was an expert on house plants. In addition to being a gifted seamstress, she was a skilled knitter and crocheter, and made clothing for members of her family, along with toys, sweaters, hats, mittens and wall decorations.
Mrs. Preuninger's talents extended to the kitchen, and she was renowned for her wonderful German cooking and baking.
She was kind and loving, but never expected to be repaid. She always said, 'Pass it on,' said her son, Frederick Preuninger.
Mrs. Preuninger was very active for many years in the Reformed Church of Huguenot Park, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Bible Studies, and served on various committees and boards.
Her husband of 42 years, Theodore, died in 1990.
Along with her son, Frederick, surviving are her sons, Carl, Roy, Donald, and Victor; her daughter, Laura Heiser; two sisters, Elizabeth Zinn and Hilda Simons; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service on April 21 at noon in the Reformed Church of Huguenot Park. Arrangements, including cremation, were handled by the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville.
