STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Native Staten Islander Kingston "Dean" McDonnell, 71, of Colonia, N.J., a retired hairdresser, competitive bodybuilder and business owner, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.
Born and raised in Tottenville, he attended Tottenville High School. He relocated to New Jersey 19 years ago.
Mr. McDonnell joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1960 and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and in Oahu, Hawaii.
After serving his country, he graduated from Wilfred Beauty Academy and worked as a hairdresser at Carlo's Salon on Forest Avenue in West Brighton for many years.
A competitive bodybuilder, he won 267 bodybuilding titles and owned the Mid-Jersey Body Building Club in Rahway. In his later years, he worked for Airborne Express and DHL, until retiring in 2008.
Mr. McDonnell was an honorary member of the Blue Knights, and was a member of the Polar Bear Motorcycle Club for 17 years.
He was described as a true patriot who loved the Marine Corps, his family and fellow club brothers.
Surviving are his brother, Jay McDonnell, and his sister, Jeanette Cafaro-Utt.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, both Tottenville. Arrangements include cremation.
