Army tank commander in Korean War and recreational athlete, of Oakwood
Kenneth H. Wegenaar, 85, died on March 3, 2016, at his home.
Funeral will be from Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, 7447 Amboy Rd., Staten Island, N.Y., on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial is at St. Charles R.C. Church at 10:15 a.m. Interment is at Ocean View Cemetery. Friends may visit on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Wegenaar moved to Staten Island to Oakwood in 1958.
He was a liquor salesman for Star-Major Industries for more than 20 years and also helped run the family business, J.L. Wegenaar Monuments in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
A graduate of Midwood High School, Kenneth served in Korea as a Army corporal and tank commander. He was a member of the Beauvais-Hudson American Legion Post No. 126.
He was an avid golfer, racquetball player, jogger, swimmer, baseball player and sports fan.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Marie, and his children, John Wegenaar, Susan Calabrese, Glenn Wegenaar and Julie Grimaldi; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
