Longtime Tottenville resident Juanita Grimes, 90, a retired legal secretary who will be remembered as a loyal friend and dedicated wife and mother, died Friday at home.

Born Juanita Hendrix in Johnson City, Tenn., she moved with her family as a child to Kearney, N.J. She graduated from Kearny High School there in 1942.

She was a Tottenville resident since 1947.

Mrs. Grimes worked as a legal secretary for her husband John F. Grimes, attorney at law, for 25 years, until retiring in 2012.

Social and outgoing, she developed many long and lasting friendships and maintained deep ties with them. She was especially close to her grandchildren and was an integral part of their lives. She also enjoyed travel and most loved when her grandchildren accompanied her on trips, family said.

She was a member of Huguenot chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and belonged to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Tottenville.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard C. Luxhoj, in 1968, and by her second husband John, in 2013.

She is survived by her son, Christian Luxhoj; her daughter, Barbara Mc Kenna and Karen Levay; her stepdaughter, Mary Imhof; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
