STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Joseph J. Carbone, 83, of Annadale, a retired garment industry executive and World War II veteran who enjoyed the arts and automobiles, died Wednesday at home.
Mr. Carbone grew up in Brooklyn and attended Stuyvesant High School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marines at the age of 15, serving as a fighter pilot, stationed in Pearl Harbor. He earned is associate's degree while in the military, finishing his service as a captain in 1947.
Mr. Carbone worked for more than three decades as an executive for a number of garment companies, including GG Young Dress Company, Leslie Fay, Susie Perette and Gloria Vanderbilt. He retired in 1988.
Mr. Carbone settled in Annadale in 2003.
A perfectionist with a passion for culture, Mr. Carbone enjoyed ballroom dancing and French champagne. He liked to attend the ballet. He had an appreciation for many kinds of music.
Mr. Carbone was very handy and took great pleasure from fixing things around the house. An auto enthusiast, he kept his cars in tip top shape, doing much of the work himself.
Surviving are his wife, Jadie Mon; his sons, Francis Carbone, John Carbone and Horace Chung; daughters, Valerie Deene, Christa Varone and Candace Hang; a brother, Salvatore Carbone, and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Cremation will be in Rosehill Crematory, Linden, N.J.
