John E.Matthies, 76 of Middletown, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, November 9th at Riverview Medical Center.
Mr. Matthies, also known as The Bop, was born in Bronx, NY and resided in Staten Island with his family for many years, before retiring from the New York City Fire Department and moving with his wife to Shallotte, NC. John spent his joy-filled retirement years fishing, vacationing, entertaining family and friends at his house in NC and going to the beach. John returned to Staten Island in 2012, and had since moved to Brighton Gardens in Middletown, NJ earlier this year.
John was predeceased by his loving parents Milton and Catherine Matthies. He is survived by his loving wife, Carmen D. Matthies, of Middletown, NJ, his daughter Renee M. Reilly and her husband John, of New Jersey, his son John P. Matthies and his wife Erika, of Staten Island, and 4 grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Teresa Molloy, Carol Hauser and Maureen Bringoli as well as his brother Gerard Matthies all of Whiting, NJ, in addition to many nieces and nephews.
The Bop was known and loved by many family members and friends. He had a great sense of humor and brought joy and laughter to many lives. He was a jokester until the end. John was a Navy Veteran serving on the USS Brumby for 3 years and was a proud member of the FDNY for 28 years.
Relatives and friends may call from 4-8PM at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.
Interment will be in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, NJ at 11:30AM
