John Grimes, 86, of Tottenville, an attorney who served in the Navy during World War II, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born in Washington, D.C., he graduated from Gonzaga High School and received his law degree from George Washington University.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1944 to 1947, aboard a land transport ship that was stationed in Okinawa.
He moved to Grymes Hill in 1953 and to Randall Manor in the 1960s. He settled in Tottenville in 1974.
Mr. Grimes was an attorney and maintained a private practice for 36 years. He was still working at the time of his death. Prior to that, he worked for the law firm of Connley, Cause and Grimes, St. George.
Mr. Grimes was a member of the Richmond County Bar Association and the Bar Association of New York. He was a member of the Beauvais-Hudson and the Labetti American Legion posts.
Mr. Grimes was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
He enjoyed being an attorney and he also loved to travel, his family said.
He was a wonderful man. He loved being a lawyer and he loved his family, said his daughter, Karen Levay.
Along with his daughter, Karen, also surviving are his wife of 39 years, the former Juanita Hendrix; one son, Christian Luxhoj; three more daughters, Mary Imhof , Barbara McKenna and Carol Bowling; 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
