STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander Joan S. Marsh, 77, of Hempstead, L.I., a former medical assistant, died Wednesday in the Mercy Medical Center, Rockville Centre, L.I.
Born Joan S. Tyrell in Tottenville, she moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 2001. She had been a resident of the Two Towers Nursing Home, Hempstead, L.I., since 2009.
A graduate of Tottenville High School, Mrs. Marsh worked for five years as a medical assistant for a physician in Pleasant Plains. Prior to that, she worked for five years as a telephone operator for AT&T in Tottenville.
She also worked for five years as a toll collector for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at the Holland Tunnel, Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing.
Mrs. Marsh was a former member of the Tottenville Racquet Club; the South Shore Swim Club, and the Elks Lodge of Sun City. When her children were young, she served as the den mother for Cub Scout Pack 21 of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Tottenville.
Mrs. Marsh played shortstop for the Plantation Club Softball Team and helped them win the 1960 championship. She enjoyed bowling, bocce and tennis. An avid golf player, according to family, Mrs. Marsh was proud of the time she made a hole in one at 135 yards at the second hole at the Deer Valley Golf Club in Sun City.
Mrs. Marsh was a former parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
She lived a full rich life, she enjoyed sports and loved competition and she was a dedicated wife and mother and she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very dearly, said her son, James Jr.
Her husband of 47 years, James H., died in 2000.
Along with her son, James, surviving are two more sons, George and Michael; one brother, Leonard Tyrell; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
