Jennie Schiano, 82, of Tottenville, a retired seamstress, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born Jennie Schiano in Monte di Procida, Naples, Italy, she moved to Brooklyn in 1948. In 1987, she moved to Graniteville and settled in Tottenville in 1999.
Mrs. Schiano worked for a few years as a seamstress for a garment company in Brooklyn before becoming a homemaker.
Mrs. Schiano was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville, where she was a member of the Holy Rosarians. She was also a former parishioner of Sacred Heart & St. Stephen's R.C. Church in Brooklyn, where she also belonged to the Holy Rosarians.
Mrs. Schiano was an avid cook known for her lemon chicken, marinated eggplant in a jar, spaghetti pie, escarole pie, and the Jennie Cake, which family members affectionately named after her.
She enjoyed making clothing and dresses for family and friends. Mrs. Schiano also made dresses for bridal dolls, and wishing wells and shower umbrellas. She enjoyed listening to Italian music.
She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and visiting Atlantic City with her AARP chapter.
My mother was a very generous person and she gave from her heart, said her daughter, Tina Kelly.
Along with her daughter, Tina, also surviving are her husband of 62 years, Biagio; one son, Salvatore; another daughter, Carmela Schiano; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
