Janice Gladys Rose, 87, of Tottenville, a homemaker who was devoted to her family and her community, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.

Born Janice Gladys Hart in Westerleigh, she moved with family to Bay Shore, L.I., when she was very young. She lived there until she was a teenager and attended Bay Shore High School before returning to the Island.

She and Allen C. Rose Sr. met at her brother's wedding on the Island. It was love at first sight and they wed about a year later.

Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Rose also worked for a silk mill in West Brighton, spooling thread and yarn.

She loved playing tennis in her younger years, along with swimming, and had taught the children in the family how to swim in the waters off the Joline Avenue beach. She also enjoyed playing cards and board games.

Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Rose had served as president of the Tottenville Improvement Council; a memberof BLAST.Org, a group opposed to filling the LNG tanks in Rossville; the Staten Island League for Better Government, and headed many campaigns to save the Island's wetlands and stop overdevelopment along the shoreline.

She also was a Girl Scout leader.

Mrs. Rose was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Tottenville, where she served as a lay reader.

Allen Sr., her husband of 47 years, died in 1993.
