STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Lifelong Staten Islander Janet A. Burke, 77, a retired R.N. and nurse administrator who is remembered as a loving aunt, died Thursday at her Tottenville home.
Born in New Brighton, she later lived in Eltingville. She settled in Tottenville around 1963.
Ms. Burke graduated from St. Peter's Girls High School and received her nursing degree from the former St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn.
For 21 years, she worked as a nurse administrator at the Institute for Basic Research in Willowbrook. She retired in 1989. Prior to that she was a registered nurse at the Staten Island Development Center in Willowbrook.
Ms. Burke was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville, where she belonged to the Rosary and Altar Society and Third Order of Mary.
She was a member of the Tottenville AARP, which she served as sunshine chair, the Stolzenthaler Columbiettes, and was active in Good Counsel Right to Life.
Ms. Burke enjoyed traveling, listening to music, watching theater productions and spending time with her many nieces and nephews.
Surviving are her sister, Patricia Nyman, and her companion, James Zeccola.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
