James P. Ciccosanti, 67, a longtime Tottenville resident, retired Sanitation Department employee, Vietnam veteran and family man, died Monday at home.

Born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, he moved with his family to Tottenville when he was 9 years old.

Mr. Ciccosanti graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, and saw duty in Vietnam. He attained the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Ciccosanti worked for the city Sanitation Department, assigned to Manhattan, until retiring in 1981.

He loved to play the guitar with his friends and classic rock and rock and roll were his favorites. He also enjoyed building things and restoring cars. Exceptionally handy, he was always busy helping his sons and other family members build and fix things.

He treasured his family and doted on his grandchildren, family said.

He was quiet and polite and soft-spoken, but also very friendly and sociable. He was selfless, and always helping people. He helped care for my mother's parents over the past five years, said his son, Daniel.

Mr. Ciccosanti was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.

Surviving, along with his son, Daniel, are his wife of 48 years, the former Valerie Berton; his son, Jay P.; his brothers, John and Peter; his sisters, Anne DeMarzo, Nancy Ciccosanti, Judy Riccobono, Joyce Ciccosanti, Frances Dowling, Irene Mirenda and Veronica Pistilli, and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
