Irene Wuethrich

April 20, 1921 — September 18, 2022

Irene M. Wuethrich, 101, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2022.  Irene was known to all as “Renie”.

Renie was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 20, 1921, and was one of six children, to James and Josephine Manifold, then moved to Princes Bay as an infant where she was raised. She was raised in a home that her father built.  In 1948 she moved to Tottenville.

Renie graduated from Tottenville High School and received the Borough President’s Award for saving a boy from drowning after falling through the ice while ice skating on a local pond.

During WW II, she was a “spotter”,where she went on top of the 123 Precinct and watched for enemy airplanes.

Renie was very active in many organizations including; American Legion Ladies Auxiliary- Beavais Hudson Post, Stolzenthaler Knights of Columbus Columbiettes, Tottenville AARP, Mt. Loretto Friendship Club, Conference House Association, Tottenville Historical Society, Staten Island Museum of Arts and History, South Shore Swim Club founder, and she was very active in the Rosary and Altar Society Our Lady Help of Christian’s.

Renie was pre-deceased in 2000 by her beloved husband of fifty-seven years, Warren. She was also pre-deceased by her siblings, who she was very proud of; sisters, Cele Pryshepa, Catherine Dabney, Florence Anderson; brothers, George T. Manifold, Chief Warrant Officer in the US Army who died in 1972 while serving in Okinawa, Anthony B. Manifold, USN Gunner, reported MIA in 1942 while serving on the USS Louisianna.  When Renie was ninety-five years old, she had her childhood street named after her brother, Anthony.

Renie is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Joann and William Wilkens, and Susan and Thomas Cali; six grandchildren; 5 Great-grandchildren.
