Howard (Buzz) Burroughs, 78, of Pleasant Plains, a U.S. Air Force veteran and �retired businessman who loved his family, sports and music, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.
Born and raised in Eltingville, he attended Tottenville High School. He settled in Pleasant Plains in 1963.
Mr. Burroughs served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1959.
He worked as a longshoreman and weigher on New York metropolitan area docks for 30 years. He then owned and operated Richmond Coffee until retiring in 2006.
Mr. Burroughs managed several teams in the Smith Softball League, including those from Joyce's Tavern and the Alibi Inn, and was an avid Yankee fan. He was an accomplished guitar player who enjoyed playing and listening to country music.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Nancy Knapp; his daughters, Lynn Cassidy, Karin Burroughs, and Kristin Burroughs; a sister, Beverly Simpson, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Arrangements include cremation.
