STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander Gustave C. (Gus) Pinto, 78, of Dongan Hills, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, of Alzheimer's disease.


Born in Stapleton, Mr. Pinto lived in Dongan Hills for most of his life. He graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School in New Brighton.


Mr. Pinto worked as the senior water treatment operator for the city Department of Environmental Protection for 25 years, retiring in 2000. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.


Mr. Pinto was the last Staten Island resident to be drafted into the Korean War, according to his family.


He was a parishioner of St. Ann R.C. Church, Dongan Hills.


Surviving are his brother, Francis Pinto, and two sisters, Muriel Plante and Ann Pizzo.


The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere.
