Gloria Byrne, 81, of Tottenville, a retired Hungerford School paraprofessional who doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, died Saturday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville.
The lifelong Staten Islander was born Gloria Teixuro in Charleston. She settled in Tottenville in 1951 and lived there until April, when she entered Eger.
A graduate of Tottenville High School, she earned her bachelor's degree from the College of Staten Island, Sunnyside, when she was 55 years old.
Mrs. Byrne was a school aide at Tottenville High School from 1973 to 1982. She then worked as a paraprofessional at The Hungerford School, Clifton, until retiring in 2007.
She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Tottenville.
Mrs. Byrne enjoyed visits to Atlantic City and going out to eat with friends.
She especially enjoyed going to the movies with her grandaughter, Melissa, and she was very proud of her grandsons, Michael and Tom, said her daughter, Lorraine Booth.
Also surviving Mrs. Byrne are her son, Jerry, and her twin great-grandsons.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. The Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, is handling arrangements.
