Gertrude Unger

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Great Kills resident Gertrude C. Unger, 90, the loving matriarch of three generations, died Thursday in Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills, where she had resided since January.

She was born Gertrude Messinger in Boston, and was brought to Great Kills as a child. She remained in the community for the rest of her life.

Mrs. Unger most enjoyed time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed trips to the Jersey Shore and Disneyworld.

"She was funny; she was warm; she was caring; she had a great sense of humor and she doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren," said her daughter, Kathleen J. Unger.

Mrs. Unger was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Great Kills.

Surviving, along with her daughter, Kathleen, are her sons, Paul H. and William G.; her daughters, Ellen R. DeCataldo and Christine M. Ready; 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: Monday December 12, 2011 10:00 AM at Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home

Visitation: Visting Saturday December 10,& Sunday December 11 , from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
