George Speth, 84, NYC firefighter, loving husband, proud father and grandfather
George Speth, 84, of Tottenville passed away on May 9, 2019. George was born and raised in Brooklyn and Queens. He graduated from Alexander Hamilton Technical High School and attended NYU, Pace College and Long Island Agricultural. After working as a tax accountant at Union Carbide Corporation and serving in the US Army in Germany, George became a NYC firefighter. He owned Lang's Service Station for a number of years, and had a gardening business and a baseball card business with his daughter, Nance. He retired in 1989 from the NYFD (Ladder 76/ Engine 151) after over 25 years of service. He was a past chapter chairman of the Knights of Columbus and a past Grand Knight of Fr. John C. Drumgoole Council, Knights of Columbus. He served as treasurer of the NYFD Retirees, SI Division. George is survived by his loving wife, Carole Speth (nee Romer), and is the proud father of Nance Speth (Mitch Maglio), Christina Cerciello (Martin), Donna Orellana (Steve), and grandfather of Alyxandra Speth-Maglio. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Janet Engel and Sister Florence Speth S.C. and his brother-in-law, Thomas Romer (Kathy), as well as many nephews, nieces, and friends. George and Carole traveled extensively and enjoyed going on cruises. Funeral is from Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial is at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church at 11 a.m., followed by a private cremation. Friends and Family may visit Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m.
