George Harry Mathis, 92, of Staten Island, New York, passed away on September 16, 2023, in Staten Island. Born on June 25, 1932, in Staten Island, George lived a remarkable life filled with adventure and cherished moments.
George, known for his friendly and outgoing nature, had a special ability to make friends wherever he went. After spending many years in Staten Island, he moved to Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, where he discovered his love for the beach. The beauty and serenity of the ocean captivated him, and he spent countless hours basking in its tranquility. Later in life, George relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to be closer to the beach that held a special place in his heart.
George had a passion for traveling, skiing, and embarking on cross-country road trips. He had an adventurous spirit and cherished the freedom of exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. These hobbies allowed him to create lasting memories and forge deep connections with people from all walks of life.
In his early years, George attended St. Louis Academy in Pleasant Plains for his primary education. He later graduated from St. Mary's High School in Perth Amboy.
George proudly served his country as an Army Sergeant during the Korean War, dedicating his time and efforts to protect the freedom and values he held dear. His military associations remained an integral part of his identity, and he cherished the camaraderie and sense of duty that came with his service.
Following his military service, George embarked on a successful career as a draftsman for SS White, later named Pen Walt. His precision and attention to detail made him a valued member of the company.
George found solace and strength in his faith and was a member of St. Joseph St. Thomas Church. His spiritual beliefs provided him with guidance and comfort throughout his life.
George is survived by his beloved sister, Marion Mathis Vantine. He was preceded in death by his sister, Geane Schrone, and brother, Thomas Mathis. Their memories will forever be cherished by those who loved him.
