When neighbors on his Tottenville block needed help from someone handy, they turned to George Dresch.
He was always available to help a neighbor. If you needed a tool, or you needed something fixed quick, you called George, said brother-in-law Gerard Spero. He never asked for a dime.
Funeral arrangements have been set for the 55-year-old Tottenville resident, who was found dead Wednesday afternoon, after Hurricane Sandy destroyed his family home.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Dresch graduated high school in that borough, and moved to Tottenville in the early 1980s. He bought his family home in 1983, then, after he and several members of his family did years of renovation work, moved there in 1987.
After graduating high school, Mr. Dresch started working as a plumber, first with his father, also named George, and then on his own later on, after his father died in 1994.
He did volunteer work at his parish, Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
Mr. Dresch loved going to Atlantic City, and was a devoted Elvis Presley fan. The family had been planning a trip to Graceland before the hurricane hit.
His daughter, Angela, 13, also died as a result of the storm.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, the former Patricia Spero, and a daughter, Jo Ann Moyer.
The funeral will be from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass Monday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, also Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
