Frank Rini, 57, of Tottenville, a retired FDNY firefighter, radiology technician and family man who will be remembered for his wonderful smile and love of life, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay, where he was taken after collapsing outside church.

Born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, he graduated from New Utrecht High School in his native borough.

Mr. Rini moved to Rossville in 1982. He had lived in Tottenville for 28 years.

He was a city firefighter for 10 years, assigned to Engine Co. 247 in Brooklyn and Engine Co. 167 in Annadale. After retiring from the FDNY in 1993, he worked as a carpenter and mechanic.

He went to the Bartone School of Radiography at New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, to become a radiology technician, and had been working for Regional Radiology on the Island for about 10 years. He was working at the time of his death.

Mr. Rini loved being outdoors and liked to go boating with his friends. A skilled carpenter and good mechanic, he could build or fix most anything, and enjoyed working on cars. He also was fond of baseball and was a New York Mets fan.

He cherished his family and the times he spent with them, and was a favorite with his friends and neighbors, his family said.

He was happy-go-lucky, always smiling, and so goodhearted. He was funny and liked to make people laugh. He was sweet and genuine, and he loved life, said his daughter, Jillian Rini.

Mr. Rini and AnnMarie Barone became teenage sweethearts after meeting through mutual friends in Brooklyn, and had been married for 31 years.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.

Surviving, along with his wife, AnnMarie, and daughter, Jillian, are his daughters, Jacqueline Cafaro and Francesca Rini; his mother, Carmela Rini; two brothers, Charles and Paul, and a grandson.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
