Frank Filoramo

Frank R. Filoramo, 91, former New York City housing contractor and World War II veteran, died Tuesday in the Silver Lake Nursing Home, Brighton Heights.

Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from New Utrecht High School in 1940. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1941 and served as a petty officer in Guam, Midway Atoll and Iwo Jima. He was involved in the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima and witnessed the American flag being raised over Mount Suribachi. During the war, Mr. Filoramo was wounded twice and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service.

After the war, Mr. Filoramo returned to Brooklyn and married Beatrice Urso in 1947. That same year he began working with his father painting and putting up drywall. In 1963, he began working as a contractor with the New York City Housing Authority and in 1967, he moved to Dongan Hills. He was employed at the New York City Housing Authority until his retirement in 1985. He moved to Little Egg Harbor, N.J., in 1988.

After suffering a stroke, Mr. Filoramo moved in his with his son, Steven and daughter-in-law, Loretta. He returned to Staten Island in 2010, moving to New Springville. In 2012, he moved into the Esplanade Luxury Senior Residences before relocating to the Silver Lake Nursing Home last month.

Mr. Filoramo was a lifelong hobby fisherman. Every Tuesday at 4 p.m. he would take his wife and sons out to spots in Sandy Hook and Manhattan Beach to go fishing and barbecue. At home, he was very handy with tools and wood. He loved home improvement projects and crafting wooden animals to give away.

He also spent time with fellow veterans as an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Cespino Russo Post in South Beach. Mr. Filoramo also kept his heritage alive through his participation in the Little Egg Harbor Italian Club.

His first wife, the former Beatrice Urso, died in 1987.

He is survived by his second wife, Nancy Morano; his three sons, Frank Jr., Steven and Donald; a stepson, Carmine Morano; a stepdaughter, Madeline Scala; twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home in Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
