STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Frances Carbone, 83, of Huguenot, a retired executive secretary who enjoyed cooking, traveling and being around people, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born Frances Fatuzzo in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, she remained in the community until 2005, when she settled with her husband in Huguenot.
She worked for 25 years as an executive secretary for a number of firms in Manhattan and also for New York City Community College in Brooklyn. She retired in 1975.
Mrs. Carbone was an outgoing and friendly woman, who would welcome in students from the college if they had nowhere to go. She kept in touch with school friends, and also enjoyed cooking.
She was famous for her eggplant parmesan, vegetable pies and other Italian specialties.
She and her husband had traveled to Europe in 1971, when they visited Italy. She liked vacationing in the Caribbean, particularly the Bahamas.
She was a member of the 72nd Street Club, a group of old school friends from the same block in Bensonhurst. Every month they would meet in one of the member's homes. She and her husband were active in the club until last month.
"She was a wonderful person; she was the best, just the greatest," said her husband of 58 years, Gabriel (Gabe) Carbone. "She loved people. She wanted to be around people." Mrs. Carbone enjoyed crocheting and knitting; she also liked sewing and crafts.
"She was a very talented woman," said her husband.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot.
Her son, Anthony, died in 1977.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, Gabe, are her son, Frank, and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
