Ellen M. Galligano, 64, of Tottenville, a dedicated teacher, mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her wonderful wit and sense of humor, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born Ellen Donoghue in Manhattan, she graduated from St. Vincent Ferrer High School there.
She relocated to Queens in 1975 and settled in Tottenville in 1980.
Mrs. Galligano held bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Hunter College, Manhattan.
She had been teaching English at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, Huguenot, since 1987, and especially enjoyed teaching her students about her favorite books, one of which was Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger. She also was president of the Irish Club at Sea.
Earlier, Mrs. Galligano had worked as a substitute teacher at Susan Wagner High School for several years.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed watching films and reading.
She was known for her witty remarks and great sense of humor, said her son, Ryan.
Mrs. Galligano was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R. C. Church, Tottenville.
Her husband of 39 years, Anthony, died in 2014.
Surviving, along with her son, Ryan, are her son, Gregory; her daughter, Ellieanne Galligano; her sister, Judy Belon, and a grandson.
The funeral will be Friday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Arrangements include cremation.
