Elaine Verna was born, Dec.5, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY to Angelo and Mary Setaro Verna. She lived there for most of her life before moving to Staten Island in 2015. She attended PS 97K, JR HS 228 K, Lafayette HS where she belonged to the Clovers, an all girls social club. She obtained a BBA from St. John’s University (SJU). She was employed by NYC Board of Education as an auditor of school lunches and custodians.
Ms Verna was a member of the Columbettes, the Italian American Women of Staten Island, the Italian Culture and Language Club where she enjoyed hearing the Italian language spoken. She was also a member of the local AARP group, the Arrochar Senior Center, and the prestigious McCallan Society at SJU.
Her interests included reading, bowling and being with her family and friends. She was an avid sports fan. She cheered for SJU Redmen (she did not call them Red Storm), and the Knicks. In high school she followed the Brooklyn Royals local baseball team. One player was her classmate Ken (Chippy) Aspromante. The Brooklyn Dodgers took the spotlight. She was heartbroken when they left. Eventually, she became a staunch Met fan. She enjoyed music, Frank Sinatra was her favorite, played the piano and has been known to win Name that Tune contests. Traveling was always on her vacation agenda. She visited her ancestral home towns of Campobasso, (CB) Ferrazzano (CB) and Fara San Matino (CH). She vacationed at 49 states, missing Hawaii. Florida was a favorite because she enjoyed the visits with her relatives and friends. She took pleasure encountering new relatives that are part of her extended family tree.
She was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her sister Dr. Marilyn Verna, her Godchildren Mary Cotogno, and William Pendegar, and numerous cousins.
