STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Edward J. McCann, 83, of Richmond Valley, a retired FDNY captain and golf enthusiast, died Monday in Mount Sinai Medical Center, Manhattan.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. McCann settled in Richmond Valley in 1959.
He served as a private first class in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was based at Fort Belvoir, Va., and saw action in Korea.
In 1959, Mr. McCann began his career as a city firefighter, working at fire-houses in Brooklyn and Staten Island, including Engine Co. 159 in Dongan Hills. He also served as a lieutenant at Engine Co. 109 in Brooklyn, and was promoted to captain in 1977. He retired from Engine Co. 172 in Brooklyn in 1983.
Mr. McCann loved to play golf and was a member of a New Jersey golf club in addition to playing courses on the Island.
He was also a member of the Beauvais-Hudson Post of the American Legion, and a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville.
His son, Edward Jr., died in 1951.
Surviving Mr. McCann are his wife of 61 years, the former Jessie V. Wilson; his two daughters, Susan Graves and Diane Edgeworth; a sister, Patricia Murray, and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
